White vs ALR vs CLR Projector Screens
Choose a screen by projector position, room light and seating layout—not by the ALR label alone.
The short answer
Use a white screen when you can control room light and want wide, predictable viewing. Consider ALR when ambient light is a real constraint, but match the material to the projector throw direction. For a table-mounted ultra-short-throw projector, use a CLR/UST material specifically designed to receive light from below; a standard-throw ALR screen may reject the projector light itself.
Start with the projector position
Screen material is directional. The first question is not “Do I want ALR?” but “Where does the projector light come from?” A standard-throw projector normally sends light from the back of the room. A table-mounted UST sends light upward from directly below the screen. Materials designed for one geometry may perform badly with the other.
When a white screen is the sensible choice
- You normally watch with blinds closed or lights dimmed.
- Seats spread across a wide viewing angle.
- You want a neutral starting point without a narrow directional structure.
- Your projector and room already provide sufficient perceived contrast.
When ALR or CLR can help
- The room regularly has ceiling or side light that cannot be removed.
- The screen material is explicitly compatible with the projector throw type and mounting direction.
- The intended seats fall inside the manufacturer viewing-angle guidance.
- You have checked gain, color shift, hotspot risk and installation tolerances for the exact material.
Four mistakes to avoid
- Buying any product labeled ALR without checking compatible projector geometry.
- Using a bottom-throw CLR material with a ceiling-mounted or standard-throw projector.
- Comparing only rejection percentages across different test methods.
- Ignoring screen flatness, frame installation and the final seating angle.
What to send for a screen recommendation
Provide the exact projector model, mounting position, target diagonal size, room-light direction, wall dimensions and seating spread. A useful recommendation needs the whole optical layout, not just the screen size.
