How Far Should a Projector Be from a 100-Inch Screen?
Calculate the distance for a 100-inch image and check whether your shelf, ceiling mount or cabinet position will work before buying.
The short answer
A 100-inch 16:9 image is about 2.214 metres wide. Multiply that width by the exact projector throw ratio: at 1.2:1, the calculated distance is 2.66 metres (8.72 feet). Confirm the position with the model installation drawing before ordering or fixing a mount.
Start with the image width
The 100-inch label is a diagonal measurement. Throw ratio uses image width: distance divided by width. For a 16:9 image, width is diagonal × 16 ÷ √337; height is diagonal × 9 ÷ √337.
That gives an image approximately 221.4 cm wide and 124.5 cm high. These are calculated image dimensions, not the outside dimensions of a screen frame. Check the screen drawing before deciding whether it fits your wall.
What different ratios mean for your room
The following are rounded calculations for a 100-inch 16:9 image using hypothetical ratios. They are not tested mounting positions or claims that a particular model supports this image size.
- 0.5:1 — 1.11 metres (3.63 feet).
- 1.0:1 — 2.21 metres (7.26 feet).
- 1.2:1 — 2.66 metres (8.72 feet).
- 1.5:1 — 3.32 metres (10.89 feet).
- 2.0:1 — 4.43 metres (14.53 feet).
A three-metre room is not a three-metre throw
For a conventional front-lens projector, use the lens-to-screen measurement in its manual. A rear shelf, the projector body, connectors and required ventilation can reduce the usable distance. Measure the planned lens position rather than assuming the full room depth is available.
If the lens can actually sit 3.00 metres from the image surface, the required ratio is approximately 3.00 ÷ 2.214 = 1.36:1. Check whether the exact model and lens support that ratio at a 100-inch image size. A model outside that range needs a different position or image size.
This calculation answers a placement question. It does not establish brightness, source compatibility or image quality. Your seating distance is a separate measurement.
Before buying the screen or drilling the ceiling
- Confirm the exact model, lens where applicable, aspect ratio and supported image-size range.
- Check the manufacturer calculator and installation drawing, including zoom range and vertical placement.
- Allow for the screen frame, cables and model-specific ventilation clearances.
- Verify the proposed image position with the actual unit before permanent installation.
For UST, use the cabinet drawing
Do not treat a calculated optical throw distance as the gap between an ultra-short-throw projector and the wall. Use the exact model placement drawing to check cabinet depth and screen height together. A distance that looks small in a specification does not establish that your existing furniture fits.
Send a room brief, not just a model name
For a home setup, send the target image size, available wall dimensions, planned lens or cabinet position, viewing light conditions and candidate model. Include the screen model if you have chosen one.
For a classroom, hotel or multi-room project, add room count, quantities, signal sources, destination and installation constraints to the same contact request. Record measurements for each room layout before requesting a common equipment specification.
Sources and review method
We prioritize manufacturer documentation and primary trade-rule sources. Product specifications and destination requirements should still be confirmed for the exact order.
